The negative health impacts of a sedentary lifestyle, such as an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and reduced life expectancy, are well-documented. But is there a way to counteract these effects effectively?

How Many Steps Should You Take Daily to Stay Healthy Longer?

Researchers from the University of Sydney have explored this crucial question. Their study suggests that increasing daily step counts can mitigate the adverse health effects of prolonged sitting, often associated with extensive computer use.

In a study involving over 72,000 participants, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, findings indicate that every additional step taken—up to 10,000 steps a day—significantly reduces the risk of premature death by 39% and cardiovascular disease by 21%, irrespective of daily sitting hours.

This research is pioneering in its use of wrist-worn devices to objectively track physical activity in real-life settings.

“This is not a get-out-of-jail-free card for excessive sitting,” says Dr. Matthew Ahmadi of the University of Sydney. “However, it sends a critical public health message that every movement counts. People should aim to counteract the health consequences of unavoidable sitting time.”

Walking to Reduce Disease Risk

The study, which analyzed data from the UK Biobank—one of the world’s largest biomedical databases—involved 72,174 individuals (average age 61; 58% women) who wore wrist accelerometers for a week to monitor their physical activity.

Researchers determined that the optimal daily step count to combat the risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle is between 9,000 and 10,000 steps. Achieving this level of activity can reduce the risk of early death by 39% and cardiovascular events by 21%.

Even at 4,000 steps per day, noticeable health benefits begin to emerge, marking this as the minimum daily goal recommended by scientists.

These findings highlight the importance of regular physical activity, even in small increments throughout the day. Every step taken contributes to better health and longevity.
