Google has rolled out an updated design for its Assistant on Android Auto, and the resemblance to Apple’s Siri interface on CarPlay is hard to miss. This latest update introduces a new user interface (UI) that appears during voice interactions with Google Assistant, bringing a touch of familiarity to those who have used Siri on Apple’s CarPlay.
Unlike the current Assistant bar, which remains at the bottom of the Android Auto screen to help initiate commands, the new interface steps in when the Assistant is awaiting a response. For instance, when you ask for directions to a specific location or business, this new UI takes over, enhancing the interaction.
From the available screenshots and descriptions, the new UI showcases a vibrant, dynamic wave that animates in sync with your voice commands. It occupies the lower section of the screen, overlaying the existing app or map display. Additionally, a pulsing microphone icon appears when you’re speaking, offering real-time visual feedback that the Assistant is actively listening.
The similarity to Siri’s interface on CarPlay is quite apparent. Siri also features a colorful, animated wave during voice interactions, which similarly occupies the lower portion of the CarPlay screen.
This UI update could potentially elevate the overall user experience on Android Auto by making voice interactions more engaging and intuitive. The lively animations and colors might make the Assistant feel more interactive and responsive. However, not all users may appreciate the change; some might find the new UI distracting or prefer the simplicity of the existing design.
Whether this new interface will become the default for all Google Assistant interactions on Android Auto or remain an optional feature is yet to be determined. Google is likely to continue refining the design based on user feedback. At present, it’s unclear how widely this new UI has been rolled out, but it has been spotted on Android Auto version 12.5 running on a Galaxy Z Fold 6.
